What we inspect and repair
Your steering system has several components that wear over time. Here's what we check and service:
Power steering pump. The pump pressurises hydraulic fluid to assist your steering. When it fails, the steering wheel becomes heavy and hard to turn, especially at low speeds. We test pump pressure output and replace the unit if needed.
Rack and pinion. The steering rack converts your steering wheel rotation into the side-to-side movement that turns your front wheels. Worn racks cause loose, vague steering and can leak fluid. We inspect for play, leaks and damage.
Tie rod ends. Tie rods connect the steering rack to your wheel hubs. Worn tie rod ends cause uneven tyre wear, wandering on the road and clunking noises when turning. We check for excessive play and replace them in pairs where recommended.
Drive belts. The serpentine or drive belt powers the power steering pump (along with the alternator and air conditioning). A worn or cracked belt can slip or snap, causing sudden loss of power steering. We inspect belt condition and tension.
Hoses and seals. Power steering hoses carry pressurised fluid between the pump and rack. Cracked hoses and worn seals cause fluid leaks, which lead to reduced steering assist and potential pump damage. We replace hoses and seals to stop leaks and restore full function.
Steering column and universal joints. The column connects the steering wheel to the rack. Worn universal joints create clunking or binding when turning. We inspect and replace column components as needed.
Warning signs your steering needs attention
Don't ignore these symptoms. Steering problems get worse over time and can become a safety risk:
- Whining or squealing when turning. Usually a failing power steering pump or low fluid level.
- Heavy steering, especially at low speed. Could be a pump failure, low fluid, a broken belt or a problem with the rack.
- Fluid leaking under the front of your car. Power steering fluid is typically reddish-brown. A puddle means a hose, seal or rack is leaking.
- Steering wheel vibrates at speed. Can indicate worn tie rods, a damaged rack or an alignment issue.
- Steering pulls to one side. May be a tie rod problem, alignment issue or uneven tyre wear caused by a steering fault.
- Clunking or knocking when turning. Often worn tie rod ends or steering column universal joints.
